This is the beginning step for a concept design. Using Procreate, I wanted to sketch out the overall anatomy and physiology of the character. I have always had a fascination with character that are more heavy set but very fast and agile. I have also always been intrigued by sumo wrestlers, so I decided to gather inspiration from the sport. The stances that I selected were meant to carry over to multiple steps in my process. I wanted to show the main features as well as slight personality through the farthest right, lower sketch. Agile and large.
For this step, I wanted to see how different values would affect the character. The different shades of grey allowed me to gain more depth for how the character would be published. A fine line for the linework is also a large portion of my drawing. Although this seems like a small detail, this allows me to clean up lines and become confident with the overall silhouette. I wanted this character to seem strong while showcasing simple linework.
This is my final step to projecting an idea. I want to give the character a strong color scheme that is memorable and unique. On the left-hand side, the description is meant to give viewers what this video game character's abilities are or thoughts of what they could be. Again, this character is meant to be very fast and somewhat of a support character role. The center drawing is a mockup of what the character could look like. I wanted to present the basics so that if others wanted to add to this character, they could easily adjust the drawing. The silhouette on the right is a form of a color swatch making the color scheme easily accessible. Juxtaposing the colors also all viewers to understand the overall color scheme that helps with feelings and emotion of the character.
This is the final splash page art that allows viewers to feel strongly about the character. I added a few characteristics like the exhaust pipes on the chin, the Japanese writing on the face (reads: machine), and the added android/machine made fingers. I think that these small details bring the character to life and make Kane a stronger character. I first started out with making the character standing, but I believe the most intriguing part of this character is his head and hand, leading me to creating a close up of these two aspects.
